The 760 area code is being split to meet the demand for new numbers
What is changing?
On November 8, 2008, Californias 760 area code will be split into two area codes. The northern San Diego portion of the 760 area code will be changed to the new 442 area code. The remaining section will retain the 760 area code (see map legend). This change will apply to both residential and business wireline and wireless service as well as other communications services.
Local calls within your area code will continue to be dialed with 7-digit dialing; local calls from one area code to another area code will require 1+10 digit dialing.
Why is the new area code necessary?
The new area code is necessary to accommodate the growing demand for new wireline, wireless and fax telephone numbers.
When will the new 442 area code go into effect?
Beginning November 8, 2008, you should start using the new 442 area code when calling numbers with prefixes identified at the bottom of this message.
If you forget, your calls will still be completed until May 16, 2009, when you will be required to use the new area code. That gives you six months to get into the habit of using the new 442 area code.
Who is affected?
All customers in the northern San Diego portion of the 760 area code will be changing to the new 442 area code, and the remaining section will retain the 760 area code.
Some of the cities changing to the new 442 area code include: Borrego Springs, Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, Fallbrook, Julian, Oceanside, Pauma Valley, Ramona, San Marcos, Valley Center, Vista, and Warner Springs. See the "Affected Prefixes" identified at the bottom of this message.
Some of the cities retaining the 760 area code include: Bishop, Brawley, Bridgeport, Blythe, Calipatria, Calexico, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, Indio, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Ocotillo, Palm Springs, Parker Dam, Ridgecrest, Salton, Victorville, and Winterhaven.
What will not change?
- Your seven digit telephone number will remain the same.
- The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change.
- Your local calling area will not change. What is a local call now will remain a local call, regardless of the number of digits dialed.
- Dialing 911, 611 and 411 is not changing.
- If 211, 311, 511, 711 and 811 are currently available to you, you can still dial them with just three digits.
What will you need to do?
- Some of the things that you may need to update to reflect the new area code include phone numbers, business stationery, packaging, advertising, databases and billing records. Also, check with friends, family and business contacts, and update your personal phone book with the appropriate area code and telephone numbers.
- If you have family or friends in the military outside of the United States, please make sure they know and use your new 442 area code beginning November 8, 2008.
- If you have services or equipment that are programmed to dial a seven-digit number that will now require the 760 or 442 area code, you or your vendor should reprogram them to include 1 + the appropriate area code when dialing. These may include fax machines, internet dial-up numbers, alarm circuits, speed dialers, call forwarding, cell phones and beepers.
Will callers have to dial differently when the new 442 area code is established?
All local calls within your area code can be dialed with just the seven-digit number. Local calls to other area codes will require 10 digits - the area code and the seven-digit number. As usual, dial a "1" before the area code. All operator-assisted calls, including credit card, collect and third-party calls, will require dialing "0" plus the 10 digits.
Using the new area code is easy. Here's how: The X's represent the numbers you're dialing.
